Invasion, day II
Jun. 25th, 2004 10:46 pmYesterday our flat was invaded by a friend, her wheelchair, her aide, and her two dogs. The dogs are flat-coated retrievers and trained as service dogs - they can help by pulling the wheel chair, fetching things for her, etc.
Our cats were really not amused. Pixel spent most of yesterday evening growling at the dogs. She sounded like a miniature alsatian, or something.
Today has been a day of much doing and going about. We started with a leisurely breakfast. After that, Thina's aide gave her a massage as she was too stiff and in too much pain to be able to do anything at first. Meanwhile I was locating some bathing places where we could let the dogs go for a swim - they need it to keep their muscle tone up. I found one, Vickie (the aide) fetched the van and we loaded Thina, the dogs, the wheelchair, me, and Vickie into it. (The van is really cool
- it's large and comfortable and it's been adapted so Thina can drive
despite her not being able to use her legs much.) We got to a shady place in the forest, close to the water. Vickie took the dogs down to the water for a swim, and Thina and I sat chatting.
When we decided the dogs had had enough swimming, we went down to the local mall and met up with
cdybedahl. Then we all went out to
jegra to have a midsummer dinner. Meat was barbecued, garlic was sauced, potatoes were baked, salad was mixed, and all of it eaten.
At about 9 p.m. Thina and I were both getting very tired. We loaded everyone into the van again and got home. Thina and Vicky are now out walking the dogs, so we got a chance to give the cats their supper in peace.
All in all, it's been a great day. I'm very happy to have Thina here, even if it's just for a few days. The only cloud is that it's confirmed that my grandfather has colon cancer and there's nothing to be done about it. He's got several months, possibly a year or two, but not more. On the other hand he's almost 90 years and I think he's been reasonably happy for most of it. And on the positive side, my grandmother (the paternal one, who's been a widow for about 15 years now), is better and has moved from the hospital to a care facility. My father has had a gall stone removed and is in recovery. So most of the family is well or getting there.
