So, yesterday we went to pick up the loom. [livejournal.com profile] jegra was kind enough to drive there and back again, which was nice as I get terribly tired after a day of driving. She got money for the gas and luggage rails for the car in return.

The loom turned out to be somewhat different from what I'd expected. The seller had said that they thought it would look like this picture when assembled. That's a loom not older than 10-20 years or so.

What we got was a loom that seemed to be more than 50 years old: more probably 100. It's beautifully crafted - the modern ones are designed for functionality, not beauty, but this one is a work of craft, not to say art. It's a lot heavier, of course, and probably a bit less easily handled single-handedly. But it has the charm of history. When I use it, I'll be carrying on a tradition in more than one sense.

I won't be able to assemble it just yet, though. I've got a wedding gown, a christening outfit, some boat cushions and several curtains to make in the next few months. And that's not mentioning the stuff I want to make for myself... I've promised myself not to assemble the loom until the wedding gown is finished.

Haiku time!

This is me getting hit by a meme. Being the kind and gentle person I am, I'm putting all the haikus behind this Read more... )

In other news, I've just finished cutting up an old sheet to make a mock-up for a wedding dress I'm going to make for a friend. So far it looks like I'd expected - i.e. not very nice, since it's only pinned together and I haven't attached a skirt yet. But it looks like it's going to work more or less as I'd planned, which is a good thing.
