Six degrees of LJ

Do you remember the old SixDegrees website? The one where you'd enter your name, and the names of people you know, and they'd add the people they know, and so on.

Today I started following the "friends" links of the people who commented on my first LJ post. It took way less than six jumps to find people I hadn't heard from in years. In some cases, people I've cared deeply for, and been sorry when our lives changed in ways that made us drift apart. And now I can see at least the part of their lives that they're willing to share with the world.

I used to wonder in what ways LJ could possibly be better than Usenet. Now I've found the first one.

I was surprised to note your name in another friend's list of friends, then realised I hadn't checked my _own_ profile recently, and there you were again :)

I have an axe now too... it needs sharpening so that I can finally chop the wood that is piled up for the fire. Okay... _we_ (me and korenwolf) have two axes, one little and one big - but I am determined that the little one is mine. It fits my hand so well :)

Axes are good to have around. I've got a much bigger one now, but it's made of plastic. I figured that if you unscrew the top part and pour lots of sand into it, then it'd be quite a good blunt instrument, even if it doesn't cut it as a sharp weapon.
